About the job
As a Fitter, you will be responsible for leading and performing mechanical fitting tasks, maintenance activities, and equipment repairs within the organisation. You will utilise your technical expertise and leadership skills to ensure the efficient operation of machinery and equipment, adherence to safety standards, and timely completion of maintenance tasks.
Responsibilities:
Mechanical Fitting:
- Lead and perform mechanical fitting tasks, including assembly, installation, disassembly, and alignment of machinery, equipment, and components according to engineering drawings, specifications, and instructions.
- Utilise hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments to accurately assemble and adjust mechanical components to ensure proper functionality and performance.
Maintenance and Repair:
- Conduct routine maintenance inspections and preventive maintenance activities on machinery and equipment to identify and address mechanical issues, defects, or wear and tear.
- Diagnose mechanical faults, malfunctions, and breakdowns, and perform repairs or replacements of defective parts to restore equipment to working condition.
Troubleshooting and Diagnosis:
- Troubleshoot mechanical problems and system failures using diagnostic tools, equipment manuals, and technical documentation to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
- Analyse equipment performance data, conduct performance tests, and interpret findings to diagnose complex mechanical issues and optimise equipment performance.
Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to safety protocols, procedures, and regulations while performing fitting, maintenance, and repair activities, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards, and minimising risks of accidents or injuries.
- Conduct risk assessments, hazard identifications, and safety inspections of work areas and equipment, and implement control measures to mitigate safety hazards and maintain a safe working environment.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment repairs, parts inventory, and work orders using computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS) or manual logs.
- Prepare maintenance reports, inspection findings, and equipment performance summaries, and provide regular updates to supervisors and management on maintenance activities and equipment status.
Team Leadership and Training:
- Provide guidance, support, and training to junior fitters and maintenance technicians, sharing knowledge and best practices to enhance their technical skills and proficiency in mechanical fitting and maintenance.
Foster a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the maintenance team, promoting excellence in performance and adherence to quality standards.
What you will need to be successful:
- Proven experience as a fitter or mechanical technician, with a focus on mechanical fitting, maintenance, and repair activities in industrial or manufacturing environments.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and technical skills, with expertise in reading engineering drawings, using hand tools and power tools, and performing precision assembly and alignment tasks.
- Knowledge of mechanical systems, components, and equipment, including pumps, motors, conveyors, bearings, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
- Understanding of safety regulations, procedures, and best practices applicable to mechanical maintenance and repair activities, with a commitment to maintaining a safe working environment.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities, with the ability to diagnose complex mechanical issues and implement effective solutions.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and interact professionally with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Relevant vocational qualifications or apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, fitting, or a related field is desirable.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or similar maintenance software is advantageous.
