Managing Quantity Surveyor

Due to significant growth over the course of 2024 OCU Northavon (part of the OCU Group) have a new requirement for a Managing Quantity Surveyor to be based in Taunton or Bishop Sutton.
The purpose of the role is to manage and oversee the quantity surveying team, ensuring all financial and contractual aspects of projects are controlled and managed effectively. The MQS will provide strategic guidance on cost management, procurement, and contract administration, ensuring projects are delivered within budget and to the highest standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leadership and Management:
- Lead and manage a team of quantity surveyors, providing mentorship and guidance.
- Allocate resources efficiently to ensure project deliverables are met.
- Conduct performance reviews and identify training needs for team members.
Cost Management:
- Prepare and oversee cost plans and estimates for projects.
- Monitor project budgets and manage cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide accurate financial reports and forecasts to senior management.
Procurement:
- Develop procurement strategies and manage tender processes.
- Negotiate and manage contracts with subcontractors and suppliers.
- Ensure compliance with company policies and legal requirements during the procurement process.
Contract Administration:
- Manage contract documentation and variations.
- Ensure timely and accurate assessment of interim payments and final accounts.
- Resolve contractual disputes and claims efficiently.
Risk Management:
- Identify and assess potential risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Monitor risk throughout the project and adjust strategies as necessary.
Stakeholder Management:
- Maintain effective communication with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships to ensure successful project delivery.
Quality Assurance:
- Implement and maintain quality assurance procedures for cost and contract management.
- Ensure all work is completed to the highest standards and complies with relevant regulations.
Skills and Experience:
Education:
- A degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Membership with a professional body such as the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is highly desirable.
Experience:
- Extensive experience in quantity surveying within the construction or infrastructure sectors.
- Proven track record in a senior quantity surveying role with management responsibilities.
- Experience in managing large-scale projects from inception to completion.
Skills:
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent financial and numerical skills.
- Proficient in contract law and standard forms of contract used in the UK.
- Exceptional negotiation and communication skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Proficient in relevant software and tools (e.g., MS Office, CostX, CATO).
- Full UK driving license.
- Willingness to travel to various project sites as required.
