Estimating Apprentice
Role Overview
We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Apprentice to join our Estimating team. As an Estimating Apprentice, you will support the estimating team in preparing cost estimates and tender submissions for Construction or Engineering projects. You’ll learn how to analyse drawings, specifications, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, materials, and labour estimates under the guidance of experienced professionals. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working towards a recognised qualification. The successful candidate will support Estimating activities across a range of workstreams within the Utility Sector, contribute to business efficiency, and develop professional skills in a dynamic work environment.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in reviewing tender documents and technical drawings.
Support in taking off quantities and preparing Bills of Quantities.
Help source and analyse supplier and subcontractor quotations.
Aid in the preparation of cost estimates, budgets, and pricing documents.
Maintain and update estimating databases and systems.
Attend site visits and meetings when required.
Collaborate with other departments (design, procurement, site teams).
Learn and apply industry standards and best practices in estimating.
• Stakeholder Collaboration: Work collaboratively with internal departments to understand procurement needs and provide effective support. Liaise with suppliers to ensure timely delivery of goods and services.
• Process Improvement & Compliance: Ensure Estimating processes align with best practices and industry regulations. Participate in audits and reviews to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
• Training & Development: Engage in training programs to develop expertise in procurement and supply chain management.
Skills and Experience:
Essential:
• Strong numerical and analytical ability.
• Attention to detail and a methodical approach.
• Eagerness to learn and take on new challenges.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; knowledge of estimating software (e.g. Conquest, Causeway, Candy) is a plus.
• Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications (with training).
• Willingness to learn and develop within the role.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Desirable:
• Previous work experience in a business or Estimating-related role (preferable).
• Knowledge of Estimating principles.
