Principal Civil Engineer (Water)
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Civil Engineer to join our dynamic, multidisciplinary water and wastewater design team in Bridgend. This role will involve leading and contributing to the delivery of innovative engineering solutions across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility studies through to detailed design, construction support, and beyond. Operating within the water sector, you will work collaboratively with clients, contractors, and colleagues to provide sustainable, high-quality solutions that meet the needs of communities and the environment.
This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in major UK water infrastructure projects, contribute to work-winning initiatives, mentor junior engineers, and engage with digital engineering innovation to support the future of the industry.
Duties & Responsibilities
As a Civil Engineer within our water sector team, your responsibilities will include:
- Project Delivery: Lead and contribute to the successful delivery of water and wastewater projects across the UK, covering the entire project lifecycle: feasibility studies, front-end design, detailed design (including Design & Build), and construction support.
- Work Winning: Support or lead bid activities, including preparing proposals, defining scope, and developing fee structures in response to client tenders, in line with company bid management processes.
- Client & Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams, communicating technical water engineering solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Collaboration: Work effectively with teams across the UK and internationally to ensure timely and successful project outcomes.
- Programme & Budget Management: Ensure projects are delivered efficiently on time, and within budget, while adhering to governance requirements.
- Design Development: Produce and review design deliverables including engineering calculations, technical drawings, and reports in compliance with relevant UK codes, standards, and internal management systems.
- Quality & Safety: Lead on the production of safe, reliable, and high-quality technical solutions, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
- Digital Engineering: Contribute to the implementation of digital engineering practices and champion innovative solutions within the water sector.
- Mentorship: Act as a mentor and technical guide for junior staff, with potential line management responsibilities.
Skills & Qualifications
- To be successful in this role, you will bring the following:
- Degree in Civil Engineering (or closely related discipline).
- Chartered membership of a recognised engineering institution (e.g., ICE).
- Demonstrated experience in design, design-and-build, project delivery, and bidding within the UK water and/or wastewater sector.
- Strong knowledge of CESWI, UK design codes, and relevant asset standards for water infrastructure and/or non-infrastructure projects.
- Hands-on experience working with contractors in a Design & Build environment.
- Excellent technical problem-solving skills and a drive to deliver engineering excellence.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with clients, contractors, and team members.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams. Highly motivated, well organised, and adaptable, with a proactive approach to challenges.
- Awareness of digital engineering tools and their applications in the water sector.
- Commitment to adopting and promoting innovation in project delivery.
- Willingness to travel to project sites or client offices as required.
- Comfortable working in a hybrid environment, balancing office, site, and remote working.
