Civil Engineer
Role Overview
We are seeking a proactive and skilled Civil Engineer to join our multidisciplinary water/wastewater design team. This role supports the agile delivery of engineering services across all project stages, from concept through to construction. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading small projects, developing and reviewing civil design deliverables, and ensuring compliance with relevant UK design standards, codes, and safety regulations. Key duties include collaborating with global teams, engaging with clients and contractors, and supporting CDM responsibilities. A strong technical background in the UK water sector, particularly in infrastructure and non-infrastructure assets, is essential, along with excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary environment across teams Worldwide, including the UK, to ensure successful delivery of projects.
- Lead small projects and contribute to the efficient delivery of projects to meet programme and budget, complying with OCU business management governance.
- Production and review of design deliverables including engineering design calculation, drawings and report writing for projects in accordance with relevant design standard, codes and Purestream design management system.
- Practice and contribute to quality and safe design of technical solutions for projects in accordance with relevant design standards and codes.
- Strong communication skills and be able to deliver technical solutions to clients and other design engineers as well as inputting into collaborative design discussions including technical workshops, and safety reviews including HAZOPs and ALMs.
- Client and construction team engagement (incl. Design & Build) and contribute to discussions on technical engineering solutions, both during project delivery and bidding stages.
- Understand how water and wastewater treatment processes and pumping systems operate and be able to assess existing site infrastructure to develop and deliver the mechanical design
- Providing support to allow the project team to comply with the duties of Designer under CDM including the production of design risk assessments.
Skills & Experience
- Educated to degree level within Mechanical engineering or equivalent; Incorporated Engineer Status or working towards achieving Chartered status with the IMechE or equivalent institution.
- Hands on experience of design/design-&-build/project and bid delivery in the water and/or wastewater engineering sector in the UK.
- A strong technical water sector background, incl. knowledge of WIMES, relevant UK codes and asset standards, for water and/or wastewater infrastructure and/or non-infrastructure assets.
- Highly motivated, organised and with a strong desire to manage and contribute to technical excellence within project teams and wider OCU team/practice.
- Experience of working with contractors to deliver the successful implementation of engineering solutions in the Design & Build environment.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work both collaboratively and independently within a multidisciplinary team including with Clients, Contractors and colleagues alike.
- Flexible approach to work type and locations for project assignments, if required, with visits to sites or client office for meetings.
